Musicals continue to break records
The Broadway district in Manhattan, New York City is vital to the theater industry in the U.S. and is a global tourism magnet. Around 40 theatres operate within this area, each of them with more than 500 seats. In 2018/19, 38 new productions were performed on Broadway, including 21 new theatrical plays. The average paid admission for a play at Broadway shows was a little over 116 U.S. dollars in the 2018/19 season. With musical tickets on Broadway costing more than plays and specials, this may have contributed to musical performances being the top revenue source during the 2018/19 season, with the figure amounting to around 1.44 billion U.S. dollars.
“Conventional” theatres vs. movie theatres
Going to the theatre is a popular leisure time activity for many people in the United States. While the average ticket price at North American movie theatres was significantly lower than that for a musical performance at around 9 U.S. dollars, the number of people attending Broadway shows is increasing every year, just as the prices for its show’s tickets are.
