The pharmaceutical industry in Mexico is a dynamic market that has seen much growth since 2000. The country continues to transform and with it, pharmaceutical companies must adapt. Since the late 1990s, the market has grown over 200 percent, and now accounts for about 37 percent of pharmaceutical sales in Latin America. There are about 400 pharmaceutical companies located in Mexico. It has become the second largest manufacturing industry in the country, after automotives.

In Mexico, Bayer, Pfizer, and Merck, are among the leading pharmaceutical companies. Bayer de México generated more than 1.4 billion U.S. dollars of revenue in 2013. Mexico’s retail pharmacy market made up about 1 percent of the global pharmaceutical market in 2008. The pharmaceutical industry in Mexico has a long history. For example, Sanofi has been present in Mexico for 85 years, employing around 2,000 people in the country.

Generic unbranded products make up a majority of drug products in Mexico due to the establishment of a simplified healthcare system that makes health care more accessible to the citizens. Generic drugs enabled more people to access medical services and medication. In 2013, 154 new molecular entities were available globally, with 45 made available in Mexico. Health expenditure in Mexico totaled to 6.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2011, in comparison to 17.9 percent in the United States.
