The film industry in India is popular with theatre goers. The industry produces over 1,000 domestic films a year in a variety of languages in order to cater to its diverse audiences. Domestic movie productions dominate the box office in India on a weekly basis. Rankings in 2015 show that India was the leading film market based on the number of movies produced. India was also the leader in terms of the number of tickets sold in 2016. In addition to the choice of language and genre, audiences are also able to choose which type of theatre they prefer. The price for an average movie ticket price in India depended on the type of theatre. In 2013, for example, ticket prices ranged from the lowest price of 56 rupees for a low-end single screen to the highest price of 239 rupees for a high-end multiplex ticket.
India is home to a multi-million dollar film industry. It is the world’s largest producer of films, ahead of Hollywood and its value can be calculated in a number of ways. Domestic box office is one way of measuring a film industry’s performance. In 2015, the domestic box office revenue in India amounted to 101.4 billion rupees. It has been calculated that, by 2021, this revenue will have by almost grown to a staggering 131.2 billion rupees. According to certain estimations, the value of the entire film industry in the country is expected to grow by roughly 80 billion rupees between 2014 and 2021.
