Since 2007, consumers spending on back-to-college clothing and accessories have remained fairly stable, averaging around seven billion U.S. dollars per year. The total expenditure on these items peaked in 2012, when American consumers spent 7.83 billion U.S. dollars on back-to-college clothing and accessories. In 2016, consumers planned to spend, on average, about 137.29 U.S. dollars on back-to-college clothing and accessories, a similar figure compared to 2015 planned expenditure. In total, parents and children expected to spend around 1,300 U.S. dollars on back-to-college items in 2015. Typical back-to-college purchases include clothing and accessories, as well as electronics or computer related equipment, food supplies, personal care products, and dorm or apartment furnishings.

From the categories previously mentioned, U.S. consumers are likely to spend the most on electronics or computer related equipment. According to the National Retail Federation, more than eleven billion U.S. dollars were spent on back-to-college electronics in 2016, more than one billion U.S. dollars more than the previous year. Consumer expenditure on back-to-college dorm or apartment furnishings, on the other hand, has slightly increased from 2014 to 2016, passing the six billion U.S. dollars mark. This is the highest figure for spending on back-to-college dorm or apartment furnishings to date. Similar to the spending on clothing and accessories, the total U.S. consumer expenditure on back-to-college food items has slightly grown after the decline in 2014, reaching 5.78 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.
