There were around 314 million mobile connections in Indonesia in 2013. A further 55 million connections are estimated to be created in the country between 2013 and 2018, bringing the total figure up to almost 370 million by 2018. In comparison to Indonesia, there were an estimated 890 million mobile connections in India in 2013 and a further 1.3 billion connections in China.

There were a total of 173.3 million mobile phone users in Indonesia in 2013, with the figure set to rise to 195.4 million by 2017. Of these mobile phone users in 2013, just under a quarter are predicted to own a smartphone, a number which will increase to 53 percent by 2017. As of December 2014, Android was the most popular mobile operating system in Indonesia as it held a market share of just under 60 percent. BlackBerry was Android’s closest competitor as the company held a share of around 12.2 percent.

One of the most popular activities undertaken on mobile phones is accessing the internet and it is estimated that mobile phone internet user penetration will reach 45.3 percent in Indonesia by 2018. Some of the most frequently used online mobile apps in Indonesia are Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). As a result of mobile phone users increasingly surfing the internet with their devices, mobile internet advertising spending is forecast to increase rapidly in Indonesia between 2014 and 2017. In 2014, the spending stood at 16.4 million U.S. dollars and this will rise to an estimated 97 million U.S. dollars by 2017. This means that spending on mobile advertising in Indonesia will grow at an average of 82 percent per year from 2014 to 2017.
