Leading athletic apparel brands amongst upper-income U.S. teens as of 2018

Nike is the leading athletic apparel brand amongst teenagers from upper-income households in the United States, with around 60 percent holding a preference for Nike athletic apparel. The American sportswear brand was five percent more popular amongst teenagers from average-income households as of 2018.

Teenage kicks

When it comes to athletic footwear brands, Nike’s popularity amongst teenagers is even more pronounced: 72 percent of teenagers from upper-income households named it their leading brand – the next ranked brand was adidas with 18 percent. Social media use amongst teenagers in the United States is extremely popular, and brands are now utilizing the platform to present marketing campaigns that engage teenagers. Nike has increased its visibility on social media, and this digital marketing contributed towards a total spend of around 1.4 billion U.S. on advertising in the United States.

Sportswear market shows strong growth

The value of the overall sportswear market in the United States has increased year-on-year since 2015 and now stands at around 60 billion U.S. dollars – it is forecast that the market value could exceed 100 billion U.S. dollars in 2025. Favored by teenagers and adults alike, Nike is the dominant sportswear company in the United States with a market share of close to 20 percent.
