Consumer spending on clothing and shoes in Germany 1970-2018

Private household consumer spending on shoes and clothing has increased in the last four decades, amounting to almost 78 billion euros in 2018. With the explosive development of mass textile production, as well as an increasing variety of affordable retail options in brick-and-mortar stores and online, this trend is not surprising.

The most popular shoe retailer in Germany, based on purchases made in the last 12 months preceding the point of the corresponding survey, is Deichmann, an established high street presence. This was also echoed in rankings of physical stores. Meanwhile, online retail revenue from clothing and shoes in Germany continuously grew in the last decade, and the figures recorded are impressive indeed, from 4.63 billion euros in 2008 to almost 16.8 billion euros in 2018. In general, clothing and shoes were also the leading categories for purchases made online in Germany.

Shopping on Saturdays

C&A was the leading clothing and textile retailer among German consumers, followed by H&M and Peek & Cloppenburg, all high street favorites. Most Germans prefer to shop for clothes and shoes on Saturdays.
