Leading car model sales in Italy 2017 As released by the Italian association of foreign car makers (UNRAE), the most sold cars as of 2017 were three models belonging to the Fiat group. Fiat Panda was by far the most popular model reaching 145,919 units sold, followed by Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat Tipo and Fiat 500. Other foreign brands appear in the leading car brands sales such as Renault, Citroen and Volkswagen.
Patriotism or costs and benefits? 

The ranking displayed indicates the major role played by small cars due to multiple aspects such as fuel consumption, taxation, general maintenance, insurance and product life cycle. Besides Fiat Tipo (which is a segment C car), the first five position are taken by segment A cars such as Fiat Panda, Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat 500. Number five of this chart is the French Renault Clio, a segment B car with 52,618 units sold.

The majority of Italians are not yet into electric cars 

Although Italians are concerned about the environment and emissions into the atmosphere, electric cars are not ranked high among themost sold cars in Italy. According to a recent survey of Kantar,the share of new car buyers who have considered and bought alternative vehicles in Italy reached 14 percent for CNG and LPG vehicles and 7 percent for hybrid electric vehicles respectively.
