Volkswagen car sales in Italy 2012-2020

Car sales of the German automaker Volkswagen in Italy declined from 138,900 in 2011 to 105,407 units in 2013 before increasing in the following years, reaching 176,813 units in 2019. The year 2020 saw Volkswagen sales drop once more, however, by over 25 percent, reaching 128,000 units for the year. Compared to other German car producers, Volkswagen performed better in Italy in 2020.

Other German competitors such as Audi, BMW, and Porsche experienced a similar trend in 2020. Audi car sales in Italy reached almost 50,000 units, a decrease of over 22 percent compared to the previous year. A similar albeit not as dramatic downward trend in sales can be noticed regarding Porsche car sales in Italy, which reached 5,688 units in 2020.

Private vehicles

As reported in a recent survey, Italian are beginning to consider alternative types of vehicles. In 2018 it was found that 27 percent of the respondents were considering purchasing a compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquified petroleum gas (LPG) vehicle, while four percent were considering purchasing an electric car.
