Canada: sales of Dollarama FY2013-FY2022
Dollarama origins
In 1992, the first Dollarama store was opened in Quebec by Larry Rossy. The concept was simple: all items were on sale for one dollar or less. The retail chain expanded throughout Canada in the coming years, and there were over 1,400 Dollarama stores in Canada as of January 2022. Ontario was the province with the highest number of stores, at 565, and Prince Edward Island had just five. Along with an expansion in their number of stores, Dollarama’s in-store offerings have also diversified, with the introduction of new price points above one dollar throughout the years.
The competitive landscape
Dollarama reigns above all other discount or value retail chains in Canada when it comes to number of locations. As of 2021, Walmart superstores and Winners came in distant second and third places with 334 and 269 stores nationwide respectively. Dollarama also comes out on top among dollar stores as of 2018: Dollarama had almost 1,000 more stores than their closest competitor, Dollar Tree, within this specific industry sector.
