Canada: number of stores of selected discount chains 2020

In 2020, the discount chain Dollarama operated over 1,271 stores throughout Canada. The Canadian dollar store retail chain accounted for almost three times as many Canada-based stores as Walmart that year.

Dollarama stores

Larry Rossy founded Dollarama in April 1992 and his stores can be found in every province in the country today.1 While the company took off in the province of Quebec, more Dollarama stores could be found in Ontario in January 2020. Quebec was home to about 361 locations, while there were over 500 stores in the province of Ontario.

Sales and merchandise

Dollarama’s annual sales have grown steadily with each consecutive year: reaching just under two billion Canadian dollars in 2013, the company doubled its annual sales numbers seven years later. The company sells a vast array of items, including merchandise, consumable products, and seasonal goods. General merch and consumables each made up about 40 percent of Dollarama’s offerings, while the remainder was accounted for by seasonal products.
