Leading European banks ranked by number of employees 2014 This statistic shows the twenty five leading banks operating on the European market, ranked by number of employees as of 31st of December 2014. In that time, Sberbank of Russia led the ranking in Europe. Sberbank is the state-owned Russian banking and financial services institution and it is headquartered in Moscow, with operations all through European and post-USSR countries. As of end of 2014, approximately 330 thousand employees were working for this bank. The UK based HSBC was the second largest employer in the European banking sector. HSBC topped the rankings of the European banks in 2016 in terms of total assets, but in the context of employment numbers it was listed second as of end of 2014, with nearly 258 thousand people working for the bank. BNP Paribas, founded in 1848 and headquartered in Paris (with Banque Nationale de Paris as a predecessor), was listed as third in the ranking, with approximately 188 thousand employees working for various segments of business and for the international services offered by the bank.
