Largest banks in Europe ranked by the return on equity Q3 2019

The figures displayed in this graph are the return on equity (RoE) of a selection of Europe's largest banks. Return on equity is an important measure of a bank or country’s banking sector's profitability. ROE is calculated by taking the amount of net income returned as a percentage of the shareholders equity. Return on Equity looks at how well a bank’s (or company’s) management is using its assets to create profits. The figures included in this statistic use the trailing twelve month income against the shareholders equity.

On a country level, Germany has continued to see poor profitability in its banking sector with returns on equity remaining below one percent.
