The statistic shows types of gaming video content viewed by internet users in the United States as of May 2015. It was found that 69 percent of respondents said they watched trailers posted by game companies promoting new releases, while 53 percent were interested in viewing walkthroughs.

There are several categories of gaming video content. Among the more popular categories are game trailers, walkthroughs, reviews and Let’s Plays. Let’s Play videos offer detailed recordings of gameplay, complete with supplementary commentary and explanations provided by the gamer. Such playthroughs often serve as tutorials for others, in addition to their entertainment aspects. The market is filled with platforms that offer streaming of such content, of which some of the more prominent ones, to name just a few, are YouTube, Twitch and Electronic Sports League. When it comes to the first two, recent research into the trend found that, in the United States, YouTube had the higher usage rate in 2015, where half of gamers used this platform to view online gaming content, compared to 20 percent who used Twitch for the same purpose.

In 2015, survey results indicated that live streams and eSports categories were viewed by 33 and 24 percent of adult Americans, respectively. However, both those categories are growing in popularity. February 2015 calculations revealed that League of Legends, a leading eSports game, had an accumulated viewing time on Twitch of 93 million hours throughout the course of that month alone. In the same period, YouTube data identified the most popular gaming channel on the platform, “PewDiePie”, which at that time had more than 42 million subscribers. PewDiePie is a Swedish comedian whose channel focuses on Let’s Play commentaries and vlogs.

Overall, it was estimated that in 2015 there were 471 million gamers watching gaming content videos worldwide, and this number was expected to surpass 500 million gaming video viewers within a year. Latin America had the largest share of their gamers viewing gaming content videos, followed by North America and Asia Pacific. Europe came last in this ranking, with 50 percent of European gamers reporting having watched gaming videos in 2015.
