International trade with bananas
In recent years, the value of fresh or dried bananas imported into Sweden fluctuated. Peaks were recorded in 2015 and 2017, reaching an amount of approximately 1.6 billion Swedish kronor respectively. Originally, bananas came from Asia but today they come from all over the world. Also, Sweden exports fresh or dried bananas. The export value from the country amounted to 198 million Swedish kronor in 2021.
Fairtrade helps to make fruit farming more sustainable by guaranteeing fair prices to the farmers. Since 2013, the sales value of fair-trade bananas in Sweden rose rapidly. As of 2015 and 2016, it reached a value of around 670 million Swedish kronor.
