Gaming among seniors in the United States – additional information
Gaming is no longer a privilege of the younger generation, thanks to the easy accessibility and user-friendly platforms nowadays. In the United States, seniors gaming has become a common phenomenon. Results of a March 2016 study indicated that about 60 percent of adults aged over 50 played games online, out of which 57 percent were female players. While the majority of senior gamers came from the 50 to 59 age group, accounting for 43 percent, a quarter of senior gamers in the United States were 70 years or older.
Gaming among seniors is gaining momentum and changing the industry paradigm, as older gamers tend to play video games more frequently. As of 2016, some 40 percent of gamers over the age of 50 played video games every day. Seniors’ preferred time of day to engage in gaming was between 6pm and 9 pm, whereas the afternoon timeslot from 2pm to 6 pm, and the night one from 9pm to 12pm, were half as popular.
Among the most cited reasons why gamers over the age of 50 said they played games were to have fun, help stay mentally sharp, relieve boredom or to be challenged. Consequently, over 40 percent of those gamers chose card, tile, puzzle and logic games as their favorites types of video games.
