Distribution of payment services in total number of payments in Luxembourg 2010-2017

Distribution of payment services in the total number of payments in Luxembourg from 2010 to 2017

Distribution of payment services in total number of payments in Luxembourg 2010-2017 This statistic shows the distribution of payment services in the total number of payments in Luxembourg from 2010 to 2017. In 2017, direct debit payments consisted of approximately one percent of all payments in Luxembourg. The most payments, however, were made with e-money. E-money payments with e-money issued by resident PSPs reached approximately 92 percent of all payments in the Grand Duchy in 2017.
Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases in the Benelux region. In 2016, Luxembourg had approximately 216 card payments per capita compared to 151 in Belgium and 232 in the Netherlands.

Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
