In the Netherlands, the number of payment transactions at point of sale (POS) terminals with cards issued rose steadily between 2000 and 2019 and experienced a slight decline in 2020. In 2019, around 4.3 billion payments with local cards were made in the country and this number reduced to about four billion in 2020. Per capita, this amounts to around 294 payments with card in 2019.
