Total number of State museum visitors in Italy 1996-2021
The total number of visitors to State museums and similar institutions in Italy increased by nearly 27 percent in 2021 over the previous year, after dropping sharply in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, Italian museums, archaeological sites, and similar cultural facilities welcomed roughly 17 million visitors in 2021. While the attendance rose from 13.3 million in the first year of the health crisis - the lowest figure reported since 1996 - it remained way below pre-pandemic levels.
