Leading German banks ranked by worldwide number of branches in 2016
Branch numbers of leading German banks 2016
This statistic presents the leading German banks ranked by the number of branches as of 2016 (state published as of August 2017). The largest German bank with the most extensive branch network was Deutsche Bank AG, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, with approximately 2.65 thousand branches throughout the country. Second in the ranking was Postbank AG, headquartered in Bonn, with over 1 thousand branches in the network as of that year. Characteristic for the German banking industry is its three-layered structure. This means the strict separation into the cooperative banks (eg DZ Bank, WGZ Bank), public law institutions (i.e. KfW Bank and Landesbanken, with only local branches, such as i.e. Haspa Savings Bank, which is only present in the region of Hamburg) as well as private commercial banks (eg Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Unicredit Bank), present throughout the whole country and internationally.
