EU-28: adjusted number of car registrations 1990-2018

This statistic records the number of new registrations of cars in the European Union's (EU) 28 member countries from 1990 to 2018. After falling sharply in 1992, registrations of cars climbed approximately 15.6 million cars in 1999. Registrations stayed at this level until the financial crisis of 2008 began a decline in car registrations which did not end until 2014, picking up again in the past four years. In 2018, there were approximately 15.3 million new car registrations.

Supplementary notes

The source does not specify whether data is for the current 28 EU member states through the entire period (regardless of whether they joined the EU after 1990 or not), or whether it only counts the member states of the EU (which just happens to be 28 countries at the moment). Due to the fact that there is very little change over the period of 2003 to 2005, a period when the EU took in ten new states, it is likely that these figures refer to the 28 members, regardless of when they joined the EU.
