When asked if they felt Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) was an offensive phenomenon in 2023, about 90 percent of respondents in the Netherlands said no. Zwarte Piet is the fictional aid of Sinterklaas, a local variation of Santa Claus in the Netherlands and Belgium. Due to his traditional black appearance, it has been publicly discussed in these countries whether Zwarte Piet is a racist phenomenon.
