Teenagers in Italy - Statistics & Facts

Teenagers are the part of the population aged between 13 and 19 years old. This age represents a very special phase of life in which a person usually develops many of the characteristics that will shape their adult life. The teenage years are also called adolescence. Teenagers go through various changes during these years, both mentally and physically, which make this some of the most curious times in life. For centuries, this phase of transition was not really acknowledged and was only recognized scientifically during the 20th century. However, the bridge to young adulthood is experienced differently based on numerous aspects, determined by cultural and economic background. In Italy, there are around four million people between the ages of 13 and 19 years old. Also in Italy, the support received and the way adolescents go through these years varies considerably from household to household.

Activities and friendship of Italian teens

Among the most popular activities of teenagers in Italy are the usual interests such as meeting with friends, or being a member of a club or an association. Friendships clearly play a very important role. Young Italians tend to meet their friends either every day or several times during the week. Other activities include being part of religious, cultural, or political associations. For instance, around 16 percent of adolescents in Italy attend religious services at least once a week. Doing volunteer work is less popular than church attendance, but still chosen by about one in ten teens. Additionally, political activities seem to be fairly widespread, with some teens participating in marches, political debates, or meetings.

Don't let them be misunderstood

Teenagerhood is not only, or not always, about free time, hanging out with friends, and being carefree. Adolescence can be a time of conflicts, both with ourselves and with those around us. This often leads to misunderstandings and miscommunication, typically with the adult generations, which can tend to diminish the problems young people face. Consequently, some teens have difficulties in trusting or talking with others. It should be not underestimated that during the teenage years, that people start to face bigger questions for the first time, have more concrete ambitions and dreams, and inevitably, face their first disappointments. In a recent survey, young Italians reported being concerned that their dreams and ambitions might be limited by the old and closed society they live in, by people's prejudices, and by stereotypes.
