Pay and online TV in Finland
Finnish households purchase the majority of active cable TV subscriptions; however, the figures also include company subscriptions. In 2022, the number reached 1.9 million users, an increase of 33 percent compared to 2012.Yle TV1, operated by the public service broadcasting company Yle (Yleisradio), was the most popular TV channel in Finland, with an audience share of 28 percent in 2022. The commercial television channel MTV3 was the second most watched TV channel with a share of 18 percent, followed by Yle TV2.
Pay TV and SVOD subscriptions gained importance in recent years after regular TV channels. While half of the households in Finland subscribed to a pay TV channel or a video-on-demand service, only 28 percent had a subscription to linear pay TV channels.
Viewing habits in Finland
The average daily time spent watching television fell below 170 minutes for the first time in 2016, and after that declined further to 158 minutes per day in 2022.While TVs are still used regularly, smartphones, tablets, and PCs also figure among the most used device for watching television and videos. More than half of the households in Finland use smartphones, and half of the households use a PC for television.
