UK aerospace company BAE Systems just announced a £5 billion deal
to sell 24 Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Qatar. According to data
from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the UK's last arms export to Qatar was in 1999. As such, the Middle Eastern country does not yet feature on this infographic showing the country's biggest arms export partners of the last ten years. By far the largest importer has been Saudi Arabia
, with considerably more than the second and third placed U.S. and India.
This infographic uses the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's "trend-indicator values" (TIV). These are based on the known unit production costs of weapons and represent the transfer of military resources rather than the financial value of the transfer.
