In 2020, 106 buildings 200 meters and higher were completed worldwide according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. That marks a 20 percent decline on the number of extremely tall skyscrapers built in 2019, largely thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic which brought numerous projects to a stuttering halt.
Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, China completed 56 buildings 200 meters tall or higher and it has been at the top of the rankings for the last 25 years. Despite its prowess at national level, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates was actually the city that topped off the most skyscrapers last year with 12 in total. It was followed by the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Shenyang with 9 and 8 completions, respectively.
New York City came in fourth place with five buildings 200 meters or higher completed. The tallest building constructed in 2020 was the Central Park Tower in New York City and it stands at 472 meters.
