Hong Kong International Airport has been plunged into chaos with flights suspended for a second day in succession on Tuesday amid massive protests. Thousands of anti-government protesters descended on the international hub for the fifth consecutive day with images from inside the terminal showing people building barricades in with luggage trolleys. So just how important is Hong Kong's airport?
Last year, it handled 74.5 million passengers, according to Airports Council International. That places it eighth on the list of the world's busiest airports, behind Heathrow (80.1 million) and ahead of Shanghai Pudong International Airport (74 million). Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta was still the busiest airport worldwide in 2018 with over 107 million passengers.
Hong Kong International Airport opened for business in 1998 and today, it is served by more than 120 airlines that fly to over 220 destinations. It also handles some 5 million tonnes of cargo.
