For years, the United States has lagged behind other developed countries in paid maternity leave. In fact, the United States and Papua New Guinea are the only countries without any paid maternity leave for new mothers
. President Donald Trump is attempting to address that massive gulf by breaking with Republican tradition and calling for at least six weeks of unemployment benefits for mothers who are not given paid leave by their employers. Together with his daughter Ivanka, Trump has proposed six weeks of paid leave and that would average just 2.8 weeks of benefits in terms of a full-rate wage equivalent. That's still light-years behind other countries such as Estonia and Germany
