Japan: dress code implementation share of businesses by size 2018

This statistic depicts the results of a survey conducted in July 2018 about the distribution of dress code implementation among businesses in Japan, sorted by business size. During the surveyed period, the majority of small businesses with less than five employees did not put any restrictions on clothing choices, while 1.3 percent implemented a dress code requiring their employees to wear formal attire.

*"Cool biz" refers to a campaign launched in 2005 by the Japanese Ministry of Environment as an effort to reduce electricity consumption during summer time in Japan. Part of the campaign was to introduce a liberal summer dress code in order to allow a reduction of air conditioner usage in offices across Japan.
