The English Premier League
The English Premier League constitutes the highest level of the English football league system. The Premier League in its current format, comprising 20 clubs, was formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992, breaking away from the English Football League, which was originally founded in 1888.

International Relevance
The English Premier League is widely considered to be the most-followed and best-known football league in the world, with an overall aggregate attendance at the games in the 2018/19 season of over 14.6 million people. This corresponds to an average attendance of around 38.5 thousand. Of the “Big-Five” leagues in Europe, which include the top-tier football leagues of England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France, only the German Bundesliga had a higher average per game. Despite this the English Premier League consistently generates the highest revenue with around 6.2 billion euros in projected revenue in the 2020/21 season. The lucrative broadcasting rights of the English Premier League resulted in this substantial revenue generating over 5 billion British pounds per year from 2016 to 2019 from its marketing of TV broadcasting rights.

Between male and female respondents, there is a strong dichotomy between the frequencies that respondents indicated watching English Premier League football matches with 61 percent of female respondents indicating that they never watch Premier League matches, in contrast to only 38 percent of male respondents. Similarly 19 percent of Male respondents indicated that they watch Premier League matches very frequently, compared to only six percent of female respondents.
