Number of URLs blocked on social media by Indian government 2016-2019

The Narendra Modi-led government ordered social media platforms to take down 3,433 URLs between January and October 2019 under the Information Technology Act, 2000. This marked a five-fold increase in social media censorship by the government when compared to data from 2016. The Indian government has been ramping up its internet censorship over the past few years with increasing internet shutdowns, content censorship and monitoring of journalistic as well as social media platforms.
