Video game sales evolution during the first week of lockdown in France 2020

During the first week of lockdown in France, digital video game sales went through the roof and increased by 180 percent, while console hardware registered a sales rise of 140.6 percent in total.

A hobby for everyone

The video game industry has established itself as a true phenomenon, both internationally and regionally, in just a handful of decades. It has become the leading cultural sector and and gradually forged a place for itself in French households. Today, video games are no longer the prerogative of a handful of initiated gamers and encapsulate all ages and genders. Almost all children aged between 10 and 14 claimed to play video games in 2019.

A game changer

The French market has become a major force in the video game sector, both in terms of production, creation and innovation. In less than ten years, the turnover of the French market has almost doubled, reaching roughly five billion euros. The mobile software and digital console software segments remain the most lucrative in France. While several French video game publishers have established themselves and have produced best-sellers, Ubisoft is the publisher that stands out and records the most revenues.
