The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the hotel industry hard in 2020 and 2021, as countries worldwide enacted travel restrictions and stay-at-home measures to limit the spread of the virus. In the hotel industry in Italy, the number of employees with fixed-term contracts decreased by nearly 42 percent in 2021 over 2019. Overall, total employment in the hotel industry in Italy dropped by roughly 37 percent in 2021 compared to pre-pandemic levels.
