International tourism spending in Italy 2019-2022

In 2022, international tourism spending in Italy was roughly 11 percent lower than in 2019, the year prior to the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, the expenditure by inbound travelers in the country amounted to around 42.3 billion euros in 2022.

International and domestic tourism spending

In 2022, the contribution of travel and tourism to the Italian GDP mostly depended on domestic expenditure, which accounted for nearly 73 percent of total tourism spending. While the international expenditure partially remained below pre-pandemic levels in 2022, domestic tourism spending in Italy surpassed the figure recorded in 2019.

Leading inbound and outbound tourism markets in Italy

When breaking down the international tourism expenditure in Italy by country of origin, Germany, the United States, and France emerged as the leading inbound tourism markets for the country. In 2022, German travelers reported the highest figure, spending more than eight billion euros in Italy. On the other hand, the United States was the country recording the highest expenditure by Italian outbound tourists that year.
