Number of electric vehicle chargers in Japan 2010-2019

The number of publicly accessible electric vehicle supply equipment chargers (EVSE) in Japan reached over 30 thousand in 2019. This figure displays a steep increase in the availability of electric car chargers compared to 2010, when there were just over 300 EVSE charging stations available in the country.

Subsidizing progress

So far, electric cars accounted for a rather small percentage of vehicles in use in Japan. According to Japanese consumers, one of the main reasons for shying off an EV purchase is accessibility of charging stations. Recent governmental endeavors to improve the domestic EV infrastructure included substantial subsidies provided to public and private stakeholders for expanding the number of publicly available charging stations.

Are efforts paying off?

Efforts for minimizing carbon dioxide emissions through road transportation in Japan are starting to pay off. Sales figures, however, paint a less favorable picture. While the number of new EVs sold in Japan grew drastically over the past decade, a reversed trend can be observed in recent years. Japanese automakers are now trying to increase the adoption rate of EVs by adding battery power to so called kei cars, a mini-sized and affordable vehicle type that is extremely popular in Japan.
