According to a survey conducted between August and October 2023 in Japan, the leading concern about plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) was the vehicle price, being stated by around 43 percent of surveyed passenger car owners. The next-most common concern was possible maintenance costs related to the battery lifespan, mentioned by 14 percent of respondents.

*The target group was private households in Japan, regardless of automobile ownership. In automobile-owning households, the main driver of the vehicle bought most recently had to respond. In the other ones, the person in the center of the household economy had to respond. Households were randomly selected in a two-step process, first determining 300 survey points reflecting regional population sizes, then conducting random walks from each point.
