Mobility experts in the Netherlands named the mobile application (app) as the characteristic that sets a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform apart from other transportation methods in 2019. 46 out of 100 experts indicated that the app is the most important factor, whereas 28 of them named the app as the second-most influential characteristic. The freedom of choice offered by a shared mobility platform was the second-most important characteristic according to most experts. Interestingly, factors such as environmental friendliness, safety and privacy were not at all being considered as important or influential. Shared mobility or MaaS platforms offer vehicles such as cars, bicycles or e-scooters for (short-time) rent to their users. Often, these vehicles are picked up and dropped off in designated areas, although some mobility services such as Car2Go allow users to leave the vehicles anywhere in the city.
