Japan: number of electronic money instruments issued 2022

As of December 2022, the number of pre-paid electronic money instruments using contactless integrated circuit (IC) chips issued in Japan amounted to around 500.2 million, up from 470.1 million in the previous year. Close to 57 million of them were issued on mobile phones. Japanese electronic money services providers offered the first pre-paid e-money cards in the early 2000s.
