Japan: number of electronic money instruments issued 2023

As of December 2023, the number of pre-paid electronic money instruments using contactless integrated circuit (IC) chips issued in Japan amounted to around 533 million, up from around 500 million in the previous year. Over 65 million of them were issued on mobile phones. Japanese electronic money services providers offered the first pre-paid e-money cards in the early 2000s.
