Japan: monthly expenditure on after-school education per examinee 2020

In 2020 in Japan, average monthly expenses for education outside of school amounted to about 21 thousand Japanese yen for students in ninth grade and 21.8 thousand yen for students in 12th grade. The average costs decreased by approximately eight thousand yen for students in both grades compared to the previous year. The source pointed out that the decline in family income and the closing of supplementary tutorial schools due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) could be the reasons for the decrease.
