During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, several museums worldwide had to close to the public for long periods, as governments enacted lockdowns and strict safety regulations to contain the health crisis. According to a May 2021 study, about 20 percent of surveyed museums across the globe claimed that the drop in the annual number of visitors was higher than 90 percent in 2020. Meanwhile, a quarter of institutions stated that the decrease in attendance was higher than 75 percent.
