The turnover of South Korean online content platform Naver Webtoon amounted to approximately 1.17 South Korean won in 2021. The word webtoon is consists of the words “web” and “cartoon”, describing online-exclusive comics that are usually available via mobile applications. Naver Webtoon, which was established in 2004, has become a major service in the growing South Korean webtoon market.

 Webtoon’s popularity

The popularity of South Korean webtoons did not only increase in South Korea, but they became also widely known globally, with both Naver Webtoon and Kakao Corporation launching foreign services in multiple countries. Those two webtoon providers are the top competitors across Asia and the United States.
Webtoons are so popular that consumers’ favorite webtoons often get adapted as animated series, TV series, or even mobile games. Netflix has also joined the webtoon market, securing the rights to screen webtoon adaptations, such as Itaewon class or Sweet Home, worldwide.

 Who uses Naver Webtoon? 

Naver Webtoon is by far the most popular service used for consuming digital comics in South Korea, meaning the majority of webtoon readers used the internet giant’s service. Among those, in general, more men than women used the application, with men in their twenties being the most likely to use Naver webtoon on their Android devices.
