Share of young adults with a part-time job in Spain Q1 2006-Q2 2023, by age group
Part-time employment within this age range is mostly involuntary, that is, these workers were not able to find a full-time job although they wished to. Regarding young Spaniards within the range of 16-19 years, the part-time rate peaked at 59.5 percent in the first quarter of 2017, a slightly higher rate than the one registered in the second quarter of 2023, 56.7 percent.
The youth part-time employment rate picked up from 2008-2009 onwards, as the Spanish job market suffered the consequences of the financial crisis. In the mid 2010s, more than a fifth of young workers aged 25 to 29 years had temporary jobs, up from less than 12 percent in 2006. By the first half of 2023, it had fallen to 16.9 percent.
