In 2023, economic costs resulting from climate change-related disasters in Latin American and the Caribbean amounted to over 20 billion U.S. dollars. This was the highest figure recorded since 2017, when hurricane Maria swept across Puerto Rico and much of the northeastern Caribbean, contributing in part to the total economic expenses of 85 billion U.S. dollars recorded that year.
