In 2021, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to over 71 thousand kilotons, representing an increase of about 3.7 percent compared to the previous year.
Most of the CO2 emissions come from deforestation for agricultural activities, and the main sources tend to be petroleum based products, as well as coal. Agriculturally driven deforestation is often linked to wildfires.
That year, methane emissions reached almost 14 kilotons, and nitrous oxide emissions amounted to over 17 kilotons.

(in 1,000 kilotons)
From the source: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from direct on-farm energy use consist of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N20) gases related with fuel combustion and electricity generation in agriculture (including fisheries).
