In 2021, methane (CH4) emissions in the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to around 13.96 kilotons. This represents an increase of almost three percent compared to the previous year.
Methane has a high global warming potential, and its short term impact on the environment and climate change is similar to that of carbon dioxide. In agricultural activities, methane emissions come from different sources such as livestock farming, particularly cattle, with manure management and enteric fermentation being key. Regarding crops farming, rice cultivation is also a driver of methane emissions.
That year, nitrous oxide emissions amounted to over 17 kilotons, and carbon dioxide emissions reached over 71 thousand kilotons.

From the source: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from direct on-farm energy use consist of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N20) gases related with fuel combustion and electricity generation in agriculture (including fisheries).
