In 2021, a majority of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in South America came from agricultural activities and land use. Approximately 50 percent of all emissions were carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, followed by 19 percent methane (CH4) emissions, both stemming from agricultural sector. Although CO2 and CH4 emissions from agriculture have had a slow decrease since 2001, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the same source have slightly increased in the same time period.
