The number of women senators peaked in the 2014 election, when 18.52 percent of seats were held by women. By 2022, women senators made up 14.81 percent of the Senate.

Senators in Brazil are elected for eight-year terms. However, elections to the Senate take place every four years. At each election, the Senate alternately renews one third and two thirds of its seats.
