U.S. retail price of potatoes 1995-2022

The retail price of white potatoes in the United States reached 0.95 U.S. dollars per pound in 2022, a slight increase from the retail price in the previous year.

Potatoes were originally domesticated in South America but are now one of the most widely produced and consumed crops worldwide. Though they sometimes get a bad rap for being high in carbohydrates, potatoes are rich in essential nutrients and millions of people throughout history have relied on potatoes for sustenance. However, in the United States, the retail volume of potatoes saw a substantial decrease from 14.5 billion pounds to 12.4 billion pounds between 2016 and 2018.

Some of America’s favorite foods are made from potatoes, including French fries, potato chips, and mashed potatoes to name a few. Most of the potato consumption in the U.S. is attributed to frozen potatoes, at nearly 60 percent. Fresh potatoes accounted for a third of total potato consumption. Among the leading potato chip brands, Lay’s was the most popular, making up a third of the overall potato chip market in the United States.
