
Annual value of foreign exchange reserves worldwide 1995-2022
The composition of official foreign exchange reserves grew by nearly one trillion USD between 2020 and 2019, after a decline in 2018. Forex reserves refer to foreign-currency deposits held by monetary authorities and governments. A majority of these reserves are made up of the U.S. dollar, although the euro and the Japanese yen did gain more prominence in recent years. In 2022, global currency reserves amounted to nearly 12 trillion U.S. dollars.
