Best-selling PC games of all time - additional information
The list of the best-selling PC games made for Windows reflects the biggest players in the computer games market, including Electronic Arts, whose “Sims” series claims four spots on the top fifteen best PC games of all time, and Blizzard Entertainment, whose Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo series take up a collective six spots on the list. Both Activision Blizzard (of which Blizzard Entertainment is a subsidiary) and Electronic Arts produce games for more than just Windows systems, and belong to the hall of fame of the largest computer and video game publishers worldwide.
Activision Blizzard held the largest share of the video game market in the United States and the European Union, accounting for almost 20 percent of the market in 2012. Two peaks in Blizzard’s revenue, from the years 2010 and 2012, corresponded to the releases of expansion packs or new installments of some of their most beloved games, including “Diablo III” and “World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.” Yet, the company experienced a record peak in revenue in 2014, when its latest WoW expansion pack – “Warlords of Draenor” - was released in November of that year. All in all, the second best revenue-generating segment for the company is online subscriptions, which consists of revenue from all World of Warcraft products, including subscriptions, boxed products, expansion packs, licensing royalties, and value-added services.
One of the most successful and earliest-released games on the list is “Myst,” an adventure game renowned for its sophisticated graphics at the time of its introduction to the market in 1993. Originally designed on and for Macintosh computers, “Myst” has since been redesigned and rereleased for most major systems. It held the title of the best-selling game all time for almost ten years, until “The Sims” outsold it in 2002—only two years after Electronic Arts released the popular sandbox-style game.
